Flour for starter

Hi All. I have been trying to make a starter without much luck, and have tossed out a few attempts. I have started one with part dry starter and rye flour. My question is does it matter much if I feed it with different flours (eg whole wheat and white flour?) I read something about feeding the starter with the same flour that will be used in the baking, which am  no so sure about because I assume one can use their starter with whatever flour they are using?
