bannetons in sydney

no5plateau

Hi All,

I'm after some bannetons (preferably oval-shaped) to raise loaves in. Does anyone know of shops or suppliers in Sydney who may sell them? Or is there some alternative? I don't suppose sourdough loaves rise very well unsupported.

Cheers,

Hi no5plateau

I've been looking too but haven't found a supplier. A baker I know said that a company called Mackies (http://www.mackies.com.au/) might do them but they will only supply to trade and I haven't tried them.

On a recent trip to England I bought a round banneton from Breads Etcetera (http://www.breadsetcetera.com/baskets.html) which cost about AU$25. They will probably post to Australia. I've baked a few loaves with it and it really makes a difference to the finished loaf.

Another option is to order them from Brotformen (http://brotformen.datenloch.de/php/inde ... tion=index) in Germany. I enquired a while ago but it was going to be a bit expensive for a small order. Perhaps if a few people wanted to combine their orders it would be cheaper. I would certainly be interested.

Bannetons are now available in The Sourdough Shop at http://sourdough.com.au/shop/index.php?cPath=1

To encourage enough orders to fill a 20kg container, first shipment orders are priced close to break-even point. Orders for this shipment must be placed and paid by September 29, 2005. Orders for shipment 1 will be forwarded to Brotformen (Germany) on September 30, 2005. Brotformen state that international orders can take 6 weeks from ordering to delivery (we hope it takes less!).

Shipment 1 Bannetons are all priced at under $20 each.
Subsequent shipments will need to be priced closer to $24 each.

Brotformen have contacted me and it is likely that delivery for this shipment will only take 3 weeks. Graham

Thanks to everybody who ordered in the first shipment. We had enough orders to fill 2 x 20kg crates. These crates left Germany on Monday 10 October, 2005. We are therefore looking at a delivery date towards the end of October (in Brisbane). Individual orders will be shipped as soon as the crates arrive.

The first shipment was virtually at cost. We have had to make a realistic price for subsequent orders...but these bannetons are still the most affordable quality German bannetons available in Australia.

Orders of 50 or more will receive a 5% discount. Order here http://www.sourdough.com.au/shop

The company named Mackies definitely supply to the public, no order too small, I didn't end up buying any bread tins from them,(only because I decided what I had already was good enough) but spoke to an ex-baker there for about 20 minutes and got great advice from him. This company even makes up "one-off" special orders - their customer relations was great.
